Over-tourism

We all know it to be true that over-tourism can suck, but it isn't all bad.

Tourism is a Double-Edged Sword

You love it and you hate it! Why? Because without it you would not know the beauty of Banff National Park or how calming the beaches are in the Caribbean. I will add that the increase of people Instagramming is creating a huge influx of tourism, but nature might not be able to handle the extra foot traffic.

Newly Discovered Untouched Wilderness Should Stay Wild

Learn to leave it alone! There should be countless places in this world that should be protected from humans. “Keep nature wild” is a huge concept that money grabbers do not seem to care about. Stop reducing the size of the National parks. Stop developing on small islands in the Caribbean. Let nature do its thing. Let nature be wild.

Tourism

In many cases with small towns #tourism is essential to their survival. Imagine if the author Rex Pickett did not write the book Sideways and have a movie created as a result? Solvang, Los Olivos, Lompoc, and more areas in Southern California would be left unknown and wine producers, farmers, and artists would have struggled. Now, Solvang is a town flourishing, and wine producers in that area are known just as much as those in Napa. Thanks to the movie industry, writers, and the media more places are being rediscovered and towns are able to stay afloat.

History Plays a Part

I know that visiting the Ann Frank House comes with long lines, though I have never visited. The history associated with the house brings a level of significance, which in turn leads to more visitors, but don't let the lines keep you away. Practicing patience can go a long way, especially if you are traveling abroad or visiting a historical place. Don’t get me wrong, I hate long lines like everyone; but, when you are traveling, a long line usually means there is something worth waiting for. I would wait for two hours if that means I can try some amazing food or see a historic place. If you despise lines, I recommend you to consider timing your day so you can avoid the busy times.

If it Bothers you that Much, Go Someplace Else.

The path less traveled means fewer people. Take advantage of going off the beaten path. Go to restaurants off the main drag, visit a nearby town, or choose a destination that is 2nd best. No shame in changing plans either. If Yosemite seems overcrowded, drive south to Sequoia/Kings Canyon. Better yet, travel during the shoulder seasons, it might be colder or rainier but at least you do not have to wait in line!

Don’t let over-tourism get you down. In some cases, the towns depend on tourists to survive.
